Vastu & Feng Shui:-

Vastu is a science, which deals with the creation of a harmonious energy field in a structure. It contains the key to realigning the home with cosmic principles such as solar energy, movement of the celestial spheres, the magnetic field of earth, gravity and influence of the Moon & Sun. Vastu brings love, peace, prosperity and contentment within household. If various activities in an office, homes and industry are directionally channelized per principles of Vastu, then we begin to draw power from nature in a natural way.

If strictly followed, Vastu forbids demolitions/ alterations or structural changes once the construction is completed, deeming them to be a mutilation. At the post construction stage, the corrective measures can be in the form of building in relevant sectors, relocating the main entrance etc. to balance the flow of energies in and around a structure. The measures at this stage also involve tackling ‘Vedhas’ (obstructions) to main entrance, interior, planning & proper distribution of elements in the interiors.

In addition, the use of astrological remedies like Mantra, Yantra and planting of auspicious trees and herbs around the building can yield positive results. Therefore the best time for Vastu advice is before construction of a building, house or office. That way an architect, if involved in the construction process can incorporate Vastu advice into the design of the house.

Fengshui is a Chinese word, where “Feng” means ‘wind’ and “Shui” which is actually pronounced as “Shway” or “Shooway” means ‘water’. Fengshui recognizes that energy can enter the building in two ways - one with air as medium and this type of energy is above the surface of the earth and is called “Feng”. The other type enters below the ground level with water as medium. The energy created is “Shway” or water energy.

Fengshui believes that by a proper understanding and application of these two forms, it is possible to create an environment inside a building which is in harmony with nature.
Vastu is more simple in approach and easy to adopt especially when incorporated in a new design. However it has very little to offer by way of gadgetry corrections and the only way one can incorporate Vastu principle is to go in for a total structural correction.

Now the question is how to reconcile differences in Vastu and Fengshui. The best way is to follow Vastu in a new construction because at this stage Vastu can be incorporated without affecting comforts and aesthetics and at the same time without increasing the building cost in any manner. Fengshui can be considered in the following areas:-

1. To get better benefit from the landscape when landscape is not as per Vastu.
2. In rented building.
3. In apartment where correction is not possible.
4. In business complex and offices.
5. In the interiors to improve the energy fields so that optimum energy levels are maintained.

There are no uniform set of rules in Fengshui as in Vastu. In Vastu , it is simple to locate the defect and suggest a correction and opinions of all Vastu consultants are seldom different.

However in case of Fengshui as there are no norms, it becomes necessary to base the conclusion more on intuitional experience. That is why intuition is considered very important for a Fengshui master. The word ‘Vastu’ etymologically means ‘the place where people dwell (Niwas). The place may either be the ground or land on which people reside or the house and other buildings people build for their use.

Vastupurush is considered to be the deity of any structure on earth. Vastupurush is said to be lying with his face and stomach touching the ground. His head is at the North - East and legs in South - West.

Thus, Vastupurush is  the deity of plots and structures and ‘Pujan’ and offerings have to be made to him. In return, the Vastupurush is said to take care of the inmates. Vastu is an understanding of eight direction i.e. four cardinal directions, north, east, south and west and four angular directions which are North-East (Eashanya), South-East(Agneya), South-West (Nairutya) and North-West (Vayavya). The central portion is called ‘Brahmasthan’.

The presiding deities of various directions are..
North   - Kuber
East     - Lord Indra
West    - Lord Varuna
South   - Yama
North-East - Shiva
South-East - Agni
South-West - Nairuti  or Putna
North-West - Vayu

Vastu is basically all about creation of this subtle conducive atmosphere in a structure. A ‘positive’ atmosphere brings out the best in us. Thus if we are successful in creating this ‘good atmosphere’ inside a structure. We will succeed in ensuring the health and happiness of the inhabitants.
